HISTORY
To know Lothar Muller is to discover a world of possibilities, whoever knows him can confirm it and never ceases to amaze, from how rich the conversation with him manages to be to the wide spectrum that his work represents. German by birth, today he has more roots in San Miguel de Allende than anywhere else and he has stepped on several soils. At the age of 65 and producing art for three decades, he is currently focused on preserving through his Kunsthaus foundation the art collection he owns –which also includes his own work–, with the intention that, in the future, when it does not inhabit this plane, it continues to spread.
The pandemic has precisely allowed him to focus on registering the work that makes up the collection; In Lothar’s words, there are hundreds of pieces, but he is sure, without being able to say a specific figure, that quantity is not quality. Likewise, the collection includes ephemeral work, so these months in a pandemic it has not been strange that his work, without neglecting the workshop and the production of his paintings, has also focused on the computer and archives, also on the remodeling of the spaces of the foundation.
Regarding whether art should be that balm that heals the emotions that have generated the pandemic and social crises such as violence, Lothar affirms: “Art is culture and culture is quality of life.” We would have to be optimistic and propose solutions, complements, and simulates the lyrics of John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’, whose manifesto, despite being 50 years old, is still valid and shows how humanity still has a lot to do for unity and peace.
Finally, about the power of art to preserve culture, Lothar is sure that it has the ability to refer to a moment and a space, it is information that transcends generations. “Art is for the future,” he says. For him, it’s about how you feel, it’s an experience. Although we are used to seeing everything in a rational way, the artist points out, art is something emotional, with it you express what you cannot do otherwise
